Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala has advanced to the Miami Open quarterfinals after Spain’s Paula Badosa withdrew due to a lower back injury.
Eala, 19, made history by stunning World No. 5 and Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the fourth round, winning 6-4, 6-4 despite battling a thigh injury.
She is now the first Filipina in the Open era to defeat a former Grand Slam champion at the WTA level.
Ranked 140th in the world, Eala also became the first Filipino player since 1990 to defeat an atop-100 opponent.
She will next face the winner of the Elina Svitolina vs. Iga Swiatek match in the quarterfinals.
