Advocates are urging the media to stop fear-driven reporting on HIV and focus on fact-based, stigma-free coverage during the “Visibility is Key” media dialogue.
Malou Quintos of UNAIDS highlighted that harmful terms like “AIDS victim” and misconceptions continue to fuel stigma, despite improvements in reporting.
HIV is a manageable medical condition with free services available, but many avoid seeking help due to fear of judgment and discrimination.
Experts stressed that HIV transmission only occurs through specific routes and urged the media to promote accurate information to combat misinformation.
Progress in fighting HIV stigma, they said, hinges on the media’s shift towards solution-focused reporting using tools like the “Empowering Stories” media guide.
