The group petitioning to disqualify several prominent politicians, including former President Rodrigo Duterte and Speaker Martin Romualdez, is urging the public to take action against political dynasties.
Alex Lacson, the lead lawyer for the Anti-Dynasty Campaign under Alyansa ng Nagkakaisang Mamamayan (ANIM), emphasized that disqualification cases must be filed to remove these candidates from office.
The petition argues that the Constitution prohibits immediate family members of elected officials from succeeding them in the same positions, a stance supported by past Supreme Court rulings.
ANIM’s lead petitioners, including bishops and retired military officials, are focusing on corruption, political dynasties, and electoral reforms.
They contend that these dynasties have turned politics into a family business, prioritizing personal enrichment over public service.
