The Bureau of Immigration (BI) raised alarms over the growing number of women trafficked abroad for illegal surrogacy, following the interception of a 37-year-old woman attempting to leave for Georgia.
The woman, recruited via WhatsApp, admitted she was promised P500,000 to become a surrogate mother.
This marks the seventh case of trafficked surrogate mothers intercepted at Philippine airports this year, with BI officials stressing that many victims are misled into surrogacy schemes under false promises.
Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado condemned these operations as human trafficking. Earlier this month, 20 Filipino women were rescued from a similar scheme in Cambodia.
