The 2025 midterm elections surprised many with opposition candidates Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan securing Senate seats, widely credited to the youth vote.
However, sociologist Athena Charanne Presto warns that attributing these results solely to youth voters oversimplifies the issue due to inconsistent definitions and diverse political engagement among Millennials and Gen Z.
Presto highlights that many young voters, especially from Gen Z, face financial and cultural barriers that limit political expression.
She also points out that the digital divide worsened by the pandemic, which affected the political awareness and participation of rural youth.
Ultimately, Presto emphasizes that the youth population is far from homogeneous and should not be generalized.
