Thousands of young workers will be deployed to public schools starting in August through a tutoring initiative by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to combat the country’s literacy crisis.
Under the program, 2,000 beneficiaries from DOLE’s Government Internship Program (GIP) and Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) will serve as reading tutors for at least 60,000 struggling learners nationwide.
The initiative targets senior high school learners, graduates, and former ARAL beneficiaries to assist early-grade teachers with focused reading sessions and remedial instruction.
This program addresses alarming literacy challenges, as a 2022 World Bank report showed 91 percent of Filipino 10-year-olds struggle with reading.
DepEd and DOLE will finalize participating schools soon, with full deployment planned for early August as part of a whole-of-government effort to boost education and provide youth employment.
