As September begins, Jose Mari Chan officially “comes out” of his annual eight-month hibernation, marking the start of the Philippines’ uniquely early Christmas season.
His iconic song “Christmas in Our Hearts” has been the most played Christmas tune in the country for 35 years, signaling the arrival of the holiday spirit.
Filipinos begin celebrating Christmas as early as September 1, often facing amused reactions from others who are still focused on Halloween or Thanksgiving.
Inspired by this tradition, producer Gino Cruz and impersonator Jon Santos created a playful tribute song titled “Mister Chan” that celebrates Jose Mari’s role in starting the Yuletide festivities.
The song captures the fun and warmth Filipinos feel as they eagerly welcome the Christmas months ahead of the rest of the world.
