TARRIELA CAUTIONS LGUS ON CHINESE AMBASSADOR’S LOCAL VISITS

Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela warned local officials to exercise caution when hosting visits by Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan, citing the controversy involving Batanes.

Tarriela linked the ambassador’s June visit to the province with a later statement by Chinese scholars claiming Batan Island as a “natural geographical extension” of Taiwan under China.

The Chinese Embassy denied the connection, accusing Tarriela of creating hostility between the two countries.

No Chinese government official has formally claimed Batanes, while the Department of Foreign Affairs maintained that Philippine sovereignty over the province is settled.

Tarriela’s remarks came amid ongoing tensions over China’s claims in the West Philippine Sea.
