Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III praised the Department of Education (DepEd) for recovering P65 million from 54 private schools that made questionable claims under the senior high school (SHS) voucher program.
Pimentel emphasized the need for stricter oversight to prevent similar issues in the future.
He raised concerns about accountability and called for reforms to avoid such anomalies.
Reports revealed that some private schools had filed claims for non-existent enrollees.
The senator also questioned the significant increase in the program’s budget from P16.5 billion in 2022 to P39.3 billion in 2023, despite a decrease in the number of beneficiaries.
