The Senate said it is ready and financially capable of conducting an impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte once the House of Representatives transmits the articles of impeachment, with Sen. Panfilo Lacson noting that at least ₱27 million is available under continuing appropriations.
Senate leaders, including President Vicente Sotto III, assured that the chamber will act “forthwith” and prepare to convene as an impeachment court as early as May 4 if necessary.
Meanwhile, lawmakers in the House, including Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco, called for clearer justification of the impeachment grounds, saying evidence must properly establish culpable violation of the Constitution or betrayal of public trust.
Tiangco also questioned whether the committee report will be sufficient as articles of impeachment, as deliberations on probable cause continue in the House Justice Committee.
The Senate emphasized it is preparing procedures and rules in advance to ensure a swift and orderly trial should the impeachment be formally transmitted.
