The Senate Committee on Local Government has approved bills seeking to postpone the November 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) while increasing the term of elected officials from four to five years.
Senate Bill 2387, filed by Sen. Francis Escudero, seeks to permanently set the five-year term, arguing that longer terms would allow barangay officials to focus on community development, disaster response, and peace and order programs without frequent election disruptions.
Sen. Imee Marcos, meanwhile, filed a separate bill proposing to move the BSKE from November 2, 2026, to October 2027, citing the timing of the election and financial concerns for families traveling to their provinces.
Groups including the Liga ng mga Barangay, Namfrel, PPCRV, and the National Youth Commission expressed support for establishing a five-year term and a fixed election schedule.
The committee will incorporate proposed amendments and recommendations into its report, which is expected to be submitted for plenary deliberation this week.
