SCHOOL ADDRESSES OVERCROWDING, CONSIDERS ‘4+1” LEARNING SETUP

The Department of Education (DepEd) is considering a “4+1” blended learning model consisting of four days of in-person classes and one day of online learning to help reduce overcrowding in schools.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the agency is also exploring expanding education vouchers to primary school students and acquiring foreclosed private properties that could provide around 1,000 additional classrooms.

DepEd is working with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines to accelerate classroom construction and mobilize local governments in addressing the nationwide classroom shortage.

The department aims to deliver about 30,000 classrooms by 2028 through conventional procurement and another 16,000 through the PPP for School Infrastructure Project Phase 3.

Angara also encouraged local governments to support innovative solutions such as prefabricated learning spaces and pooled education funds to fast-track school infrastructure development.
