QC EYES RAINWATER CATCH BASINS AFTER WEEKEND FLOODS

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte is considering the construction of rainwater catch basins as part of the city’s drainage master plan after heavy rains recently caused widespread flooding.

In coordination with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), potential sites identified include the Amoranto Sports Complex, Veterans Memorial Golf Course, and Ateneo de Manila University’s football field.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said a proposal for the Amoranto catchment will be presented in two weeks, noting that construction could take up to 18 months.

The Department of Budget and Management has expressed support for possible funding, while experts from UP and the DENR will be consulted for technical guidance.

The initiative seeks to reduce flooding in major city areas, particularly along Katipunan Avenue, which was submerged last weekend.
