A new bill filed in the House of Representatives aims to make lessons on the West Philippine Sea mandatory in all public and private schools, similar to core subjects like math and reading.
House Bill 1625 requires teaching the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated China’s expansive claims over the South China Sea and emphasizes the Philippines’ legal rights within its exclusive economic zone.
The curriculum will also cover China’s incursions, their impact on food security, and the cultural and economic importance of the sea to Filipino fishing communities.
The bill mandates collaboration between the Department of Education, the National Historical Commission, and other agencies to develop comprehensive learning modules.
Currently, lessons on the West Philippine Sea are part of the K to 10 curriculum, but the bill seeks to legally enforce and deepen these teachings nationwide.
