The Philippines has improved its press freedom ranking, moving up to 116th place in the 2025 annual press freedom index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), marking its highest rank in over two decades.
Despite this improvement, the country remains classified as a “difficult” place for journalists, reflecting ongoing challenges in the media environment.
The Philippines’ score rose to 49.57 out of 100, up from 43.36 last year, with improvements across all five indicators: political, economic, legislative, social, and security.
The country saw the most significant gains in security, which increased to 61.57, while political and economic indicators remained more challenging.
Globally, Norway led the index, while Southeast Asia saw the Philippines ranked ahead of countries like Singapore and Indonesia but behind Timor Leste and Thailand.
