Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. defended the deployment of 2,000 police officers to arrest influential pastor Apollo Quiboloy, accused of sex trafficking and hiding in a bunker at his church’s compound in Davao.
Quiboloy, a longtime friend of former President Rodrigo Duterte, denies the allegations.
Marcos stated that the large police presence was necessary to secure the 74-acre compound, amid criticisms from Duterte and his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, who accused the police of rights violations.
Quiboloy’s followers blocked the police from enforcing the arrest, turning the compound into a “garrison,” according to Quiboloy’s lawyer.
