Despite the Philippines’ withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2019, Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra stated that the government will not obstruct the ICC’s investigation into the Duterte administration’s drug war.
The ICC, led by Prosecutor Karim Khan, is probing alleged “crimes against humanity” committed during the anti-drug campaign.
Although the Philippine government will not assist in the investigation, it cannot prevent the ICC from proceeding.
Former Senator Antonio Trillanes expressed the belief that the Marcos administration might eventually cooperate with the ICC.
The government maintains that the Philippines has a functional justice system and asserts the ICC has no jurisdiction over the country.
