PHILIPPINES SUMMONS CHINESE AMBASSADOR OVER AYUNGIN SHOAL COLLISIONS

In response to a series of “dangerous maneuvers” by Chinese vessels that resulted in two collision incidents off Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, the Philippines has summoned Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian. The announcement was made on Monday, October 23.

During a press conference held by the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Spokesperson stated that the ambassador was summoned on Monday morning.

However, due to his absence from the country, the DFA summoned China’s deputy chief of mission to Manila instead. DFA Assistant Secretary Aileen Mendiola-Rau carried out the summoning process.

The collision incidents occurred on October 22 during a routine resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre. Chinese ships, belonging to the China Coast Guard and Chinese Maritime Militia, engaged in maneuvers that involved blocking, harassment, and collisions with two Philippine vessels: the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Cabra and the Unaiza May 2, a military-contracted supply boat.

Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela, showcased the damage inflicted on the BRP Cabra’s port side during the press conference. The extent of the damage to the Unaiza May 2 is still being assessed.

This incident marks the first collision between Philippine and Chinese government ships in the West Philippine Sea. The Philippines strongly asserts that China’s actions have violated numerous international rules and laws during these “dangerous maneuvers” against them.

Furthermore, Manila has raised concerns about China’s presence in Ayungin Shoal, which falls within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines.
