The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) will start covering free cancer screening tests for its members beginning August 14 to promote early detection and reduce costly late-stage treatments.
This new benefit targets high-risk cancers such as breast, lung, liver, and colorectal, and aims to increase access to screenings, especially for Filipinos who skip them due to expenses.
PhilHealth CEO Dr. Edwin Mercado emphasized the agency’s focus on bringing essential health services closer to communities and lowering the screening age for women to 40 due to rising cancer cases among younger individuals.
Under the Yaman ng Kalusugan Program (YAKAP), PhilHealth will cover the cost of various diagnostic tests, including mammograms and colonoscopies, available through accredited clinics.
The initiative aligns with global efforts to address cancer, one of the leading causes of death worldwide, by promoting early treatment and reducing the disease’s emotional and financial burden on families.
