The Philippines led the adoption of a resolution at the 58th UN Human Rights Council session to begin drafting a new international treaty promoting the rights and welfare of older persons.
Supported by a core group of countries, the resolution aims to address age-based discrimination, violence, and limited access to social services faced by the elderly.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo emphasized the country’s commitment to securing a global treaty that upholds the dignity and rights of senior citizens.
The resolution initiates a formal intergovernmental process, with the first meeting scheduled before the end of 2025.
The DFA highlighted the Philippines’ long-standing advocacy for elderly rights internationally and through national legislation.
