The Philippines has expressed disappointment over Timor-Leste’s rejection of its request to extradite former Negros Oriental congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr., who faces multiple murder and attempted murder charges.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) formally conveyed its concerns, questioning Timor-Leste’s lack of trust in the Philippine justice system.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla warned that the refusal could affect Timor-Leste’s bid to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Philippines plans to appeal the decision after Dili cited concerns over potential torture or inhumane treatment of Teves if extradited.
Teves, accused of masterminding the 2023 assassination of former Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo, remains at large.
