Senator Francis Pangilinan has called on the government to take immediate and proactive measures to safeguard overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) following recent incidents of violence abroad, including the death of caregiver Leah Mosquera in an Iranian missile strike and the attack on MV Eternity C.
He emphasized the need for stronger diplomatic ties, better labor agreements, and increased legal and financial support for OFWs.
Pangilinan said the government has a moral and constitutional duty to protect OFWs, who he described as “modern-day heroes” supporting both their families and the national economy.
He also urged for real-time monitoring of OFWs in high-risk areas and a review of deployment policies.
Highlighting the vulnerability of 2.2 million OFWs, he stressed the long-term goal of creating a robust domestic economy so Filipinos can choose to work at home.
