PADILLA EDUCATED ON CONSENT DURING THE SENATE HEARING

Senator Robinhood Padilla, during a Senate hearing on sexual harassment and abuse in the media industry, questioned whether a husband could compel his wife to have sex if she was unwilling.

Lawyer Lorna Kapunan, a women’s and children’s rights advocate, firmly stated that “no means no,” even within marriage, emphasizing the importance of consent.

Padilla appeared surprised by this, expressing concerns about a husband’s needs if his wife refuses.

Kapunan advised that counseling, prayer, or watching Netflix are better responses than coercion, and stressed that respect and mutual consent are essential in marriage.

She also noted that forcing a spouse into sex could be grounds for annulment due to psychological incapacity.
