EJ Obiena, world No. 5 pole vaulter, will compete at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold in Beijing tomorrow as he aims to regain top form ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next week.
Training in Beijing under coach Vitaly Petrov, Obiena said his preparations are going well despite managing back issues.
Before Beijing, he trained in Formia, Italy, where he shortened his approach and cleared 5.75m, signaling a potential jump of over 5.90m.
Obiena qualified for Tokyo with a 5.90m jump at the 2024 Paris Olympics but has struggled with injuries this year, missing some events to recover.
Alongside 400m hurdler Robyn Brown, Obiena is one of two Filipino athletes set to compete in Tokyo, with PATAFA focusing on the upcoming SEA Games.
