NO SPECIAL ELECTION FOR ANGARA REPLACEMENT, INDICATES COMELEC

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) stated that a special election to replace Sen. Sonny Angara is improbable following his appointment as the new education secretary by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia noted that due to the short time remaining in the current Senate term and the high cost of a special election, it is more probable that the Senate seat will remain vacant until the 2025 elections.

Angara accepted the education secretary position, which Vice President Sara Duterte will vacate by July 19.

The Senate would need to call for a special election to fill the seat before then. Meanwhile, President Marcos approved the July 29 opening of classes for public elementary and high schools for the upcoming school year.
