The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has passed a resolution prohibiting the substitution of candidates after the deadline for filing candidacy papers for the upcoming elections next year.
The filing period for the certificate of candidacy spans from October 1 to 8, 2024. Chairman George Erwin Garcia stated that the decision was unanimous, emphasizing that substitution will only be permitted in cases of candidate death or disqualification, provided the substitute shares the same surname and political party as the original candidate.
This measure aims to prevent confusion among voters and prompt political parties to promptly submit their candidate lists.
Previously, the substitution deadline was set more than a month after the candidacy filing period.
