Generational views on mental health differ significantly, according to clinical psychologist Karen Ibañez, who spoke at The Manila Times News Forum.
She noted that younger people, particularly Gen Z, prioritize mental health, while older generations, like boomers, often struggle to acknowledge mental health issues.
Mental health is becoming a more openly discussed topic in the Philippines, especially among younger Filipinos who are more willing to talk about their mental struggles.
Despite the 2018 enactment of the Philippines’ first mental health law, Republic Act 11036, there remains a shortage of qualified professionals and challenges in accessing mental health services, particularly in rural areas.
Ibañez emphasized the importance of parents being educated and open to discussing mental health with their children to help address these issues.
