The Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) has urged the public to stay vigilant and well-informed as mpox cases continue to surface in the country.
All local cases belong to the less severe Clade 2 variant, with no detection of the more virulent Clade 1b linked to the 2024 outbreak in Congo.
PSMID clarified that mpox spreads mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and not through airborne transmission in public spaces, making mandatory mask-wearing unnecessary.
They advised those with suspicious rashes to seek medical evaluation and isolate if diagnosed, as most cases are mild but could pose risks for immunocompromised individuals.
With vaccines still in limited supply and no specific treatment available, prevention and early detection remain key.
