MMDA WARNS AGAINST COERCION OF DRIVERS NOT JOINING STRIKE

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has issued a warning to militant transport groups, urging them to refrain from coercing drivers into participating in the ongoing jeepney strike.

The MMDA’s Traffic Discipline Office director for enforcement, Victor Nuñez, revealed that leaders of transport groups in Malabon City and Novaliches, Quezon City, have complained about alleged harassment by members of the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) and Manibela groups.

According to Nuñez, these transport groups have been blocking jeepneys leaving terminals, preventing them from carrying out their duties of ferrying commuters. This alleged harassment has caused inconvenience not only to the drivers but also to passengers who are scrambling to find transportation.

Nuñez emphasized that Piston and Manibela should honor their commitment that no jeepney driver would be forced to join their two-week transport strike, which is set to continue until next week.

The MMDA has deployed police personnel to address the complaints and prevent further harassment. Nuñez stated that the police will take appropriate action based on the reported incidents. As of now, Piston and Manibela have not responded to the allegations.
