President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. dismissed the idea of installing water cannons on Philippine ships sailing through the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and emphasized that the country would not retaliate to recent Chinese attacks on its vessels.
Despite China’s increased presence in the WPS, including dispatching hundreds of coast guard vessels, Manila remains committed to defending its sovereign rights through diplomatic means without escalating tensions.
Marcos reiterated that it is not the mission of the Philippine navy or coast guard to provoke or increase tensions in the disputed waters.
The Philippines will continue to respond to South China Sea incidents through diplomatic channels and assert its rights in the WPS without resorting to offensive measures.
Additionally, there has been speculation about the implications of recent confrontations between Philippine and Chinese vessels on the US-Philippine mutual defense treaty, but Marcos emphasized the importance of diplomatic solutions.
