MANALO CLARIFIES AYUNGIN DEAL: NO NOTIFICATION REQUIRED, JUST INFO EXCHANGE

The Philippine government clarified that there was no agreement to notify China before conducting resupply missions to Ayungin Shoal, emphasizing that the arrangement was for an “exchange of information” rather than prior notification.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo stated that the successful resupply missions show the Philippines’ commitment to future operations, provided China adheres to the understanding.

He also criticized China’s interpretation of the deal, asserting it was mischaracterized. During a press conference with US officials, both Manalo and Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro assured that the Philippines’ strategy in the West Philippine Sea remains unchanged.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated support for the Philippines under the Mutual Defense Treaty and urged China to uphold its commitments.
