President Marcos is set to sign the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers into law, which aims to protect the rights and welfare of around 500,000 Filipino seafarers.
The law outlines their rights, such as fair working conditions, legal representation, medical attention, and access to communication, while also defining their duties.
Senate President Francis Escudero emphasized the importance of the law, given the risks faced by seafarers, who represent a significant portion of the global maritime workforce.
Some senators, however, opposed the bill due to a controversial provision on the execution bond, which delays the enforcement of rulings in favor of seafarers until all appeals by foreign employers are exhausted.
Despite this, the law is seen as a critical step in ensuring proper protection for Filipino seafarers.
