Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman is urging the Philippines to rejoin the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the International Criminal Court (ICC). Lagman emphasized the need for the country to reaffirm its commitment to justice and accountability, especially in light of alleged human rights abuses.
The Philippines withdrew from the Rome Statute in 2019 under then-President Rodrigo Duterte amid an ICC investigation into his controversial war on drugs.
Lagman argued that the Philippines’ absence undermines its ability to pursue justice on an international level.
He called on Congress to pass a resolution urging the country’s return to the treaty, highlighting its significance in upholding human rights.
