LABOR DEPARTMENT URGES PRIVATE SECTOR TO ADOPT ENERGY-SAVING WORK ARRANGEMENTS

The Department of Labor and Employment is urging private companies to adopt flexible work arrangements, such as a four-day compressed workweek or work-from-home schemes, to conserve energy and reduce fuel consumption amid rising oil prices caused by the Middle East conflict.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said these measures align with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive and should be voluntary, mutually agreed upon, and compliant with labor and occupational safety standards.

The compressed workweek maintains a 40-hour schedule across four days, while work-from-home or hybrid setups allow remote work for part of the week, depending on the nature.

DOLE noted that feasibility varies by industry, with sectors like mining, agriculture, and manufacturing potentially facing limitations, and requires employers to report finalized agreements through its online compliance portal.

Workers seeking guidance can reach out to DOLE’s regional offices or Hotline 1349 for assistance.
