INSURGENCY DECLARED OVER IN MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL BY ARMED FORCES

The military has officially declared Misamis Occidental province, previously a stronghold for communist rebels, as “insurgency free,” a milestone announced by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during a ceremony in Tangub City.

This achievement is attributed to consistent military efforts and community-building initiatives led by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

The New People’s Army (NPA) had a notable presence in the province since the 1970s, but their last armed stronghold was dismantled in December 2023, with remaining fighters neutralized in nearby areas.

The government has since cleared 51 of the 60 villages that once hosted NPA fighters, leading to the implementation of development projects aimed at improving local infrastructure and services.

Governor Henry Oaminal emphasized that building peace is a collective responsibility and expressed optimism that improved road networks would boost economic opportunities and further enhance peace in the region.
