INDONESIAN PRESIDENT’S VISIT SPARKS RENEWED PLEA FOR MARY JANE VELOSO’S CLEMENCY

Indonesian President Joko Widodo is set to arrive in the Philippines for a three-day official visit, during which he is scheduled to meet with President Marcos at Malacañang.

The meeting is expected to focus on the progress in Philippines-Indonesia relations, reaffirming their commitment to deepening and expanding ties, especially as the two countries will celebrate their 75th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations in November 2024.

The Philippines and Indonesia, as founding members of ASEAN, have enjoyed longstanding and robust cooperation in various areas.

Meanwhile, Migrante International has reiterated its appeal for the clemency and freedom of Mary Jane Veloso, an overseas Filipino worker on death row in Indonesia since 2010, as President Widodo arrives in Manila.

The group has called on President Marcos Jr. to raise the issue of Veloso’s clemency and freedom during his meeting with President Widodo. Veloso’s case, which has garnered international attention, is considered by many to be a victim of human and drug trafficking.

The outcome of discussions regarding Veloso’s case is yet to be determined.

Veloso’s 39th birthday coincides with the second day of President Widodo’s Manila visit, prompting her family, friends, and supporters to wish for her clemency and freedom on this occasion.
