Gilas Pilipinas suffered a tough 95-87 upset loss to Chinese Taipei in their opening game of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup held in Saudi Arabia early Wednesday.
Despite rallying from a 17-point first-quarter deficit, the Filipinos struggled to contain the hot shooting of World No. 73 Chinese Taipei, led by Ying-Chun Chen’s 34-point explosion.
Justin Brownlee scored 19 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter, while Kevin Quiambao added 17, but their efforts weren’t enough to overcome poor three-point shooting and costly turnovers.
The loss marks the second straight defeat to Chinese Taipei this year, following their February Asia Cup qualifier loss.
Gilas looks to rebound against World No. 22 New Zealand on Thursday at 11 p.m.
