The provincial government of Negros Occidental has raised concerns over the Supreme Court’s recent decision that allows commercial fishers in municipal waters, which may impact over 45,000 small-scale fishers from 472 fisherfolk associations.
Governor Eugenio Lacson emphasized the importance of supporting local fishing communities, who have been empowered through sustainable fisheries programs that ensure food security and biodiversity conservation.
Lacson has called for the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to pass a resolution expressing concern about the court’s decision.
The Provincial Environment and Management Office (PEMO) also condemned the ruling, fearing it would threaten livelihoods and marine biodiversity.
Local leaders and senatorial candidates have pushed for legislative amendments to protect small-scale fishers and strengthen the conservation of marine ecosystems.
