Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Norman Tansingco raised concerns on Monday about the ease with which Chinese migrants acquire Philippine citizenship, citing national security implications.
Tansingco’s remarks followed the interception at Ninoy Aquino International Airport of a Chinese national, alias “King,” who falsely presented himself as a Filipino upon arrival after being trafficked to Myanmar.
King, 40, confessed to using a Chinese passport initially to evade scrutiny, having left the Philippines in July 2023 under a permanent residence visa.
Despite being repatriated to the Philippines with a Philippine travel document, King revealed he had not returned to China since infancy, with his mother holding permanent residence and his father supposedly a naturalized Filipino.
