Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero has recommended retaining the existing impeachment rules for Vice President Sara Duterte’s upcoming trial to avoid perceptions of bias.
He warned that changing rules mid-trial could lead to accusations that the Senate is favoring one side.
Escudero proposed that any rule changes should apply only to future impeachment cases, subject to approval by the impeachment court.
He explained that the trial will formally begin once the Senate plenary acknowledges the articles of impeachment, which prosecutors must read aloud.
Escudero also stressed that senators will decide independently, without political pressure, and refrained from speculating on the trial’s outcome.
