The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will launch the third year of its “Tara, Basa!” tutoring program on May 19 to improve literacy among elementary students and engage parents in learning.
The program will benefit 138,407 participants, including over 12,000 college student tutors, more than 60,000 grade school learners, and 6,019 youth development workers who will conduct sessions for parents.
Implemented across 13 regions, the initiative provides cash-for-work incentives to college tutors based on regional minimum wages.
Since its start in 2023, “Tara, Basa!” has served over 197,000 students, tutors, and parents, with updated materials developed alongside education experts.
The program was declared a flagship national government initiative by President Marcos in November 2024 under Executive Order No. 76.
