The Department of Energy warned that Filipinos may continue to experience rotational blackouts this year as yellow and red alerts are expected to persist across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao amid the looming effects of El Niño.
Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella said at least one more yellow alert is projected in Luzon, along with several yellow and red alerts in the Visayas and Mindanao due to tight power reserves and high electricity demand.
The Visayas grid was again placed under yellow alert after several coal-fired power plants remained unavailable during peak hours.
Meanwhile, Energy Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara warned that recent grid alerts could lead to higher electricity rates in the June billing cycle.
The government is also working to stabilize key transmission lines and restore affected power generation capacities to prevent further supply disruptions.
