The Department of Education (DepEd) and the National Electrification Administration (NEA) signed a partnership on Wednesday to electrify off-grid schools, with a focus on last-mile institutions.
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that electricity is not just a basic need, but a beacon of hope for learners, especially in remote areas like the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
The partnership will provide solar power systems for about 1,500 schools, with DepEd allocating PHP1.295 billion for the project.
NEA Administrator Antonio Mariano Almeda stressed the importance of electricity for modernized education, enabling access to digital tools like the Internet.
The initiative is part of a larger goal to modernize education and is supported by the Department of Energy.
