COMELEC URGES CONGRESS TO FIX DATE FOR FIRST BARMM PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

The Commission on Elections announced it will ask the House of Representatives to set a fixed date for the first-ever Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliamentary elections, as the Bangsamoro Transition Authority has yet to pass a redistricting law.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the Supreme Court’s March 31 deadline is approaching, and failure to pass a new law could violate existing provisions under RA 12123.

The Comelec expressed concern over the BTA’s continued delay, despite an earlier extension until November 30.

Garcia emphasized that amending the law is necessary to legally fix the election date and ensure smooth preparations.

The poll body reaffirmed its commitment to follow the Supreme Court’s directives.
