COMELEC SETS DASMARIÑAS SPECIAL ELECTION, CLEARS BARZAGA TO RUN

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has scheduled the special election for Dasmariñas City’s lone congressional seat on Aug. 29 and opened the filing of certificates of candidacy from July 15 to 17.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said former representative Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga remains eligible to seek the post despite his expulsion from the House of Representatives, noting that his removal does not carry a lifetime ban from public office.

Former Cavite congressman Gilbert Remulla is emerging as a possible challenger, setting the stage for a closely watched contest in one of the province’s key political districts.

The election period will run from July 30 to Sept. 13, with strict enforcement of bans on vote-buying, unauthorized firearms, election-related fundraising, and other prohibited activities.

Campaigning will be allowed until Aug. 27, followed by the customary campaign silence before election day.
