COMELEC LINKS SMARTMATIC TO OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS INVESTIGATION

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has traced two offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, allegedly linked to the poll body’s former service provider, to a company with the same address as the service provider.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia questioned why the address of Albatross Technologies Corporation, a subsidiary of Smartmatic Services Corp., matched that of the entity that opened the accounts.

He revealed that funds were traced back to Jaleo Consulting, LLC, owned by Jose Herrera, who is also a director of Albatross Technologies.

Smartmatic denied any involvement in the allegations, calling them baseless and asserting that their focus is on a separate Supreme Court case.

The company, which previously served Comelec, was not allowed to bid for the upcoming 2025 elections, which were awarded to South Korean firm Miru Systems.
