COMELEC CRACKS DOWN ON CAMPAIGN VIOLATIONS AS LOCAL ELECTIONS BEGIN

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) warned candidates against violating campaign regulations as the local election campaign period begins, with Chairman George Garcia emphasizing strict enforcement of disqualification rules.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has placed 75% of its force on heightened alert to prevent election-related violence, while additional law enforcers will be deployed in identified hotspots.

In Pasig, local candidates signed a peace covenant to ensure an orderly campaign, with Mayor Vico Sotto calling for fairness and peace.

Meanwhile, Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian confirmed that the P26-billion Ayuda sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP) will continue after securing a Comelec exemption, warning politicians against using it for electoral gain.

He urged the public to report any unlawful acts, stressing that tampering with government aid is illegal and punishable by law.
