A Chinese naval ship aimed its fire control radar at the Philippine Navy frigate BRP Miguel Malvar during a patrol near Sabina Shoal, which the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) called a “provocative” act.
The incident occurred on March 7 within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone in the contested South China Sea.
AFP spokesperson Rear Adm. Roy Vincent Trinidad said the Philippine vessel issued a radio challenge, prompting the Chinese ship to stow its radar and de-escalate.
The encounter highlights rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where overlapping claims have led to repeated confrontations.
The AFP reaffirmed its commitment to lawful maritime patrols and protecting Philippine sovereignty while advocating for peaceful, rules-based dispute resolution.
