The Department of Education (DepEd) is rolling out a pilot of its revamped senior high school (SHS) curriculum in 55 schools across Central Visayas for the school year 2025–2026.
The updated curriculum slashes core subjects from 15 to five and significantly increases work immersion hours from a maximum of 120 to up to 600.
Students in academic tracks will also be allowed to take technical-vocational electives that can lead to national certifications, in partnership with TESDA.
This pilot aims to improve graduates’ job readiness, addressing long-standing concerns about inadequate workplace preparation and low functional literacy, which currently stands at only 67.6% in the region.
DepEd is also strengthening reading comprehension programs and integrating media literacy to improve students’ real-life skills and critical thinking.
