The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has rescheduled the filing period for certificates of candidacy (CoCs) and the manifestation of intent to participate (MIP) for the first parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to November 4-9, from the original dates of October 1-8.
This change follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that Sulu province is not part of the Bangsamoro Region, prompting Comelec to adjust its administrative and electoral activities.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia noted the exclusion of Sulu has significant impacts on pre-election activities, including adjustments to parliamentary districts and party memberships.
The first BARMM parliamentary elections will be held on May 12, 2025, alongside national and local elections, with officials assuming office on June 30, 2025.
The new parliament will consist of 80 members, including party, district, and sectoral representatives, and will elect a chief minister who needs at least 41 votes to secure the position.
